Docents: Want to learn more about Mesa's History? Be a docent!!! Docents are guides that help visitors learn about the museum and Mesa's past. Training to be a docent is easy and fun! There are no lengthy requirements, just a few hours a month will enable you to help others appreciate the past. Become a Mesa Historical Museum Docent today!

Cataloging Assistants: One of our current projects involves creating accurate records for all of our artifacts, pictures, and documents. Volunteering in this area requires only light paperwork but will give you the opportunity to interact with real objects under the supervision of our collections manager.

General Volunteering: Not interested in being a guide or a cataloging assistant but still want to volunteer? No problem, we have many opportunities for volunteers other than giving tours. We can work with your schedule, interests, and talents.

Youth Volunteers: We accept youth volunteers working towards service hours for National Honor Society, high school diploma honors, etc. Teens usually help at the front desk and/or with special events. ** Must be 14 years of age or older. **

Special Events or Projects: We can also accommodate more sporadic volunteers, particularly to help out with special events (such as the Historic Home Tour), or special, irregular projects (Spring grounds cleanup, Collections work days, etc.).

So, what is it like to be a volunteer at the Mesa Historical Museum?

I felt volunteering as a cataloging assistant at the museum was a good match for me. It combined my desire to contribute to my community with my fascination for history. And the experience has far exceeded my expectations.

On some days, I examine, research, and then catalog a donated item. Other days are spent scanning photographs and other archival items, moving towards a digital record of the museum's photographic collection. It is much more "hands on" than I'd ever imagined. Each week I'm presented with a different aspect of Mesa's history; from pioneers, to citrus labels, to Cactus League! Volunteering at Mesa Historical Museum has proven to be a wonderfully varied and fulfilling way to give back to the community.
